When should I hire a bookkeeper?

When the books stop being a two-hour job and start being the reason you avoid looking at your numbers. For most owners that is somewhere between 50 and 100 transactions a month, or the first time you hire somebody.

Clearer signals: you do not know whether last month was profitable, you are finding out about problems from your bank balance, invoices are going out late, your tax preparer charges for cleanup every spring, or you are spending a weekend a month on it when your own billable rate is several times what the work costs to hand over.

The usual objection is cost. Run it as a number: hours spent, times what an hour of your work is worth, plus the cleanup fee you pay anyway, plus the deductions that get missed in a rushed year.

Ours starts at $200 a month with the tax return included, which is the comparison most people are actually trying to make.
