I got a CP59 from the IRS. What does it mean?
A CP59 means the IRS has no record that you filed your personal tax return for the year on the notice.
What to do depends on where things stand:
- If you filed within the last eight weeks, you do not need to do anything yet.
- If you filed earlier than that, check that the name, Social Security number and tax year on the notice match your return. Send a signed and dated copy, and make sure the return was not rejected when it was e-filed.
- If you have not filed, file now, or explain why you were not required to.
- If you believe the IRS made a mistake, you can respond on Form 15103.
Why it matters: if you owe, penalties and interest keep growing until the return is filed and the tax is paid. If you were owed a refund, there is a strict time limit to claim it, generally three years from the original due date.
If the IRS does not hear from you, it can prepare a return for you using only the income it knows about, with none of your deductions or expenses. That version almost always shows a higher balance than a return you file yourself.
Behind on more than one year? That is a common situation, and it is fixable one year at a time.
