I got a CP503 from the IRS. What does it mean?
A CP503 is the IRS's second reminder that you owe a balance, and it means the IRS has not heard from you after its earlier notices.
The tone gets firmer here for a reason. A CP503 is usually the last reminder before a CP504 notice of intent to levy, and the IRS may file a federal tax lien if the balance stays unresolved.
What to do:
- Check the balance and tax year against your own records.
- Pay in full by the date on the notice if you can.
- If you cannot, set up a payment plan now. An agreement in place before collection starts is far easier than one negotiated after.
- If you disagree with the amount, call the number on the notice before the due date. You can also ask for a Collection Appeals Program review before any collection action.
What not to do: wait for the next letter. The gap between a CP503 and a CP504 is where most of the easy options still are.
