I got a CP49 from the IRS. What does it mean?
A CP49 means the IRS used all or part of your refund to pay a tax debt you already owed.
It is not a penalty. The IRS applies refunds to open balances on other years or accounts before sending anything back. If there is money left over, a check for the rest usually arrives within about three weeks, as long as nothing else is owed.
What to do:
- Check which tax year and balance the refund was applied to.
- If a balance is still left, pay it or set up a payment plan. If you already have a plan for that year, keep making your payments.
- If you think the offset is wrong, call the number on the notice with your records ready.
If you are married and the debt belongs only to your spouse, you may be able to get your share back by filing Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation.
If this keeps happening year after year, it usually means there is an old balance that needs a plan of its own. Clearing it means future refunds actually reach you.
