I got a CP2501 from the IRS. What does it mean?

A CP2501 means income reported to the IRS by employers, banks or payment apps does not match your return, and the IRS wants you to explain the difference.

It is not a bill. It is an early, softer step than a CP2000, and answering it well can stop the matter from going further.

The difference may raise your tax, lower it, or not change it at all. Common causes: a 1099-K from a payment app, a brokerage sale reported without its cost, or a 1099 sent to the wrong person.

What to do:

  1. Compare each item on the notice with your records.
  2. If you agree, sign the response form and choose the reply option. Both spouses sign on a joint return.
  3. If you disagree, send the signed response form with a written explanation and your proof. Include any expenses connected to the income, since those can reduce or erase the tax.
  4. Respond by the date on the notice. If you need more time, ask for it in your reply.

You can send your reply through the IRS document upload tool, by fax, or by mail to the address on the notice.

Do not pay a number you have not checked. Income reported with no costs attached is one of the most common reasons these letters overstate what you owe.

Send us a photo of the first page of the notice. We will tell you what it means for you and what to do next.
