I got a CP22A from the IRS. What does it mean?

A CP22A means the IRS made changes to your return, often ones you asked for, such as an amended return, and you now owe a balance.

It is common after a 1040-X, a correction you asked for by phone, or a change that came out of earlier correspondence with the IRS.

What to do:

  1. Compare the changes with what you asked for or expected.
  2. If you agree, pay by the date on the notice to limit penalties and interest. If you cannot pay in full, set up a payment plan.
  3. If you disagree, call the number on the notice and have your amended return and documents ready.

One thing to know: interest on a balance from an amended return runs from the original due date of the return, not from the date you amended. That is why the amount can be higher than the difference you expected.

If the amendment was supposed to lower your tax and this notice says you owe more, something did not go through the way it should have. That is worth a second look before you pay.

Send us a photo of the first page of the notice. We will tell you what it means for you and what to do next.
