I got a CP12 from the IRS. What does it mean?
A CP12 means the IRS corrected something on your return and, because of it, your refund changed or you are now due a refund you were not expecting.
Sometimes the change helps you and sometimes it costs you. Either way, the notice explains what was changed and why.
What to do:
- Compare the changes with your return and your documents.
- If you agree, you do not need to respond. A refund check usually arrives in about four to six weeks, unless it is used to pay another tax debt.
- If you disagree, contact the IRS by the date on the notice. Calling is usually the fastest way to sort it out.
Why the date matters: responding by the deadline on the notice, generally 60 days, protects your right to have the change reversed. Miss it and you can still send documents later, but you lose that formal right.
Common causes worth checking before next year: a missed estimated payment, a credit claimed without a required form, or a number typed into the wrong line. Fix your own copy of the return so the same mistake does not carry forward.
Send us a photo of the first page of the notice. We will tell you what it means for you and what to do next.
