Do I need to charge sales tax?

In Florida, generally yes on goods and on a handful of specific services, and generally no on most professional services. The details are state by state and they change, so the answer always depends on what you sell and where your customers are.

The questions that decide it:

  • What are you selling? Tangible goods are usually taxable. Professional services usually are not, with named exceptions like commercial cleaning, pest control and commercial rent.
  • Where is the customer? Selling into other states can create an obligation there once you pass that state's threshold for sales or transactions.
  • Are you a marketplace seller? Platforms like Etsy and Amazon collect and remit for you in most states, but you may still have filings.

If you should have been collecting and were not, the liability is yours, not your customer's, and it compounds quietly.

Worth a conversation before you launch a product line, not after.
